The warmer months of the year are the most popular for weddings. If you’ve been struggling to find the perfect piece of jewelry or ensemble for your wedding day, look no further. PARTS By Heather has countless options and offers custom designs for all budgets. Suite101 caught up with designer Heather Mandin to discuss wedding jewelry options.

Suite101: Do brides typically come to you knowing exactly what they want?

Heather Mandin: No, most brides come to me with a color scheme in mind, or just with a preference of silver or gold, and I ask that they give me a price range right off the bat so I can give them all the material and design options that are available in that range. I usually like to meet with the bride in person or have a couple of phone conversations and see a few photos of the bride and the dress and any other accessories.

I like to get a feel for the bride’s style first and the style of the wedding From our first consultation, I conceptualize a few different looks (in sketches/drawings) and then we have a second consultation and define the design a bit more specifically. By the end result, I have a happy beautiful bride with stunning accessories

Suite101: What is the biggest challenge in incorporating jewelry into a wedding ensemble?

Heather Mandin: Going too matchy-matchy. I love to suggest complimentary colors, stones, and designs that bring the whole look together instead. I think it is probably easier to integrate custom designs as opposed to ready made wear, because then the bride truly gets to mold her exact look and highlight whatever aspects she chooses. Plus she ends up with a design that is truly unique to her on her special day and not available to anyone else.

Suite101: How can a bride get started on a custom design with you? What should she come prepared with?

Heather Mandin: I will need to know the date and season and style of the wedding, and what her price range is. Any idea of what her dress will look like (fabric swatches and photos are great), how she plans to wear her hair and makeup (a few ideas are fine), what her personal style is like, if she has any colors, stones or designs in mind and if she prefers a sterling silver or solid gold base.

Then we work out what kind of designs are feasible and everything else we work out together. Some brides come knowing nothing for sure and prefer to give me total creative freedom within certain specifications and other brides know exactly what they want to the last detail.

Suite101: How far in advance should a bride-to-be get started on her wedding designs?

Heather Mandin: It depends on what she is looking for and when she is getting married. For hairpieces, I generally require 2 - 3 weeks, earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets can take from 1 week to 6 weeks depending on the materials and design. Overall, I prefer 2 - 3 weeks notice. But sometimes a bride will want to purchase last minute bridesmaids gifts; again, it depends on the design. PARTS By Heather makes lovely bridal party gifts as well, and a bride can choose to have the designs custom wrapped to her color specifications.

Suite101: What price ranges are available to custom clients?

Heather Mandin: Price ranges: $40 - $150 for hairpieces/bands, $50 - $500 for earrings, $70 - $500 for a bracelet, $75 - $1500 for a necklace. There is quite a price range, thus making custom jewelry affordable to every bride.
